Updated: 5 days ago

The Zambezi River’s Victoria Falls, the Chobe River’s Elephants, the Kwando River’s predators, and the Okavango River’s biodiversity await you. Explore the life-giving waters of these permanent waterways. Their meanderings bring sustenance to the otherwise arid Kalahari sands. This is a wilderness where Africa’s mega herbivores roam. Here, predator and prey have danced the eternal dance of survival for centuries.

Feel the essence of a country filled with palms, acacias, buffalos, lions, hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles, and tiger fish. Waterlilies sway alongside painted reed frogs. Expansive horizons are dotted with palm islands. Crystal-clear waters fringed with papyrus create a timeless beauty. The savanna is scented with wild sage. This is the Botswana you will come to love.

Expedition Information

General Overview

This program is designed to give you the best opportunity to experience the wildlife and scenic beauty of Botswana and the spectacular Victoria Falls of Zimbabwe. The expedition emphasizes appreciation for an incredible and diverse wilderness. Wildlife is prolific. You can expect to see various animals; however, nature is unpredictable.

Experience has shown that the high season is the best time for memorable wildlife encounters.

Your journey begins in Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls. Your hotel, Ilala Lodge, is within walking distance of the falls, local markets, restaurants, art galleries, and a craft brewery. You will explore the falls on your self-guided tour best during the afternoon. The sun’s position offers spectacular views. You will also witness the falls and Batoka Gorge from the air during your booked helicopter flight. Later, get up close with rescued elephants during your Elephant Encounter activity.

Botswana’s Chobe is renowned for the best elephant viewing on the continent. This is the main reason it is included in the program. Grant will guide you on excursions into the national park by open 4x4 vehicle and motorboat. Prepare for memorable encounters with the largest land animals on Earth.

For the remainder of the program in Botswana, Kwando Safaris will host you. Three carefully selected safari camps are chosen for their excellent locations and reputations for exceptional wildlife encounters. You’ll enjoy comfort and delicious bush cuisine during your stay.

Your expedition begins at Victoria Falls International Airport in Zimbabwe and ends at Maun International Airport in Botswana. International flights are your own responsibility.

Health & Safety

Currently, visitors to Botswana and Zimbabwe are not required to show health vaccinations. However, it's wise to carry proof in case of any policy changes. Both countries are considered ‘medium risk’ malaria destinations. September is considered a ‘low risk’ month, so consult your physician for proper prophylaxis.

Statistically, safaris are among the safest leisure travel options. However, you will travel to remote areas far from medical facilities. Emergency medical evacuation is included for Lebala, 4 Rivers, and Pom Pom only. It is highly recommended to carry travel and medical insurance. Keep emergency contact numbers handy for camp personnel.

The 'high season' coincides with the dry season, which leads to lower insect densities, though insect bites may still occur. The health risk from insect bites is typically limited to nuisance values. A histamine reaction can be managed with cream or antihistamine medication.

The Kalahari is home to venomous creatures, but they are typically shy. By exercising caution, encounters are rare. ‘Expected encounters’ may be arranged by your professional guides.

Care and Hydration

The Kalahari is a semi-arid environment. It's essential to stay hydrated with water and electrolytes. Always carry water and remember to top up with your guides. Drink one sachet of Oral Rehydration Salts every second day to maintain electrolyte levels.

UV radiation in Botswana is high. It’s essential to use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to avoid sunburn. Dehydration and sunstroke can sneak up. Symptoms include nagging headaches and general tiredness. Treat these symptoms with shade and an electrolyte drink for immediate relief.

Though Covid protocols have diminished, practicing general health precautions is wise before travel. Long flights can increase exposure to infections, so take measures to limit exposure. A course of multivitamins is advisable at least a week before departure.

Laundry Facilities

Laundry services are available throughout the program. However, it's an extra cost at Ilala Lodge and Kubu Lodge. The convenience of laundry means packing light is easier. It is suggested to pack for a ‘four-day long weekend with a chance of chilly weather.’

Charter Flights

You will be transferred between camps by light aircraft. These flights operate from dirt bush airstrips in 6–12 seat single-engine aircraft. There is a combined luggage weight limit of 20kgs (45lbs) in soft-sided bags.

The winter lasts about eight weeks (mid-June to mid-August). Temperatures steadily rise through the dry season, peaking in late October and November. Expect sunny days with little or no rain.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (Two Nights)

Welcome to Zimbabwe! Upon arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport, proceed to immigration and purchase your single-entry visa (cash required). After collecting your luggage, you will see your driver from WILD HORIZONS holding a sign with your name. Enjoy a short 20km (12mi) drive to Victoria Falls, where you will be dropped off at Ilala Lodge. Your accommodation is reserved in a Deluxe Room on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

With its central location, Ilala Lodge is within easy walking distance of the falls, local craft markets, shops, and various restaurants. After settling in, take the 10-minute stroll to the entrance of Victoria Falls National Park for a self-guided tour of this Wonder of the Natural World (entry $50 per person). Afternoon is the best time for viewing the falls, as the Zambezi rises and falls seasonally.

Be prepared for a delightful experience. You may get wet! Protect your camera gear using Ziploc bags. You will be dry by the time you return to the hotel.

The next morning, you will be collected by WILD HORIZONS for a helicopter flight over the falls. Enjoy unique views of the extraordinary geology of the falls and the gorge it has cut into the basalt plateau. In the afternoon, participate in your Elephant Encounter activity. These rescued elephants love daily interactions with people guided by experienced handlers.

Day 3 & 4: Chobe, Botswana (Two Nights)

After breakfast, WILD HORIZONS will collect you for the road transfer to Botswana (75km/47mi – about 1 hour). After clearing immigration at the Botswana-Zimbabwe border, it is a short drive to Kubu Lodge in Kazungula. This quaint lodge is ideally situated on the Chobe River, with magnificent trees providing sanctuary for the delicate Bushbuck antelope. Accommodation is reserved for you on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis.

Grant will meet you and brief you on the next two days’ activities. Your first activity is an afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River into the world-famous Chobe National Park. During the dry season, wildlife is highly dependent on the river, making game viewing by boat especially rewarding. Expect elephants to flock down to the water to socialize, drink, mud-bathe, and frolic. Antelope, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffes, and colorful birds will complete the experience.

The next day starts early as Grant drives you into the park before sunrise, aiming to find some of Chobe’s Big Cats. A picnic breakfast on board means you’re not rushed to return. The wildlife and heat will dictate your schedule. In the afternoon, choose between another boat excursion or driving back into the park.

Lebala Camp offers luxury safari accommodation. Enjoy spacious rooms, tasteful furnishings, and scenic views of the surrounding floodplains. Each day begins with morning starts and late afternoon excursions extending into spot-lit night drives. Professional guides and trackers prioritize bringing you close to the action. Expect to see all predators, big and small, along with elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and more.

Lebala is also an excellent spot for a morning walk with an armed guide to appreciate the smaller details of nature.
